Anime is chronologically younger than American
animation yet feels ancestrally older.
American animation began with Disney in the
1920s; anime crystallized in the 1960s with
Tezuka. Anime adopted fewer frames and
stylized visual shorthand — still images,
symbolic backgrounds, exaggerated expressions.
This economy evokes older traditions: ukiyo-e,
scroll painting, kabuki, noh masks. Younger in
time, older in spirit. The modern that
masquerades as ancient.
