ancient theory of humors, where black bile was
the humor of melancholy. In ritual
imagination, it is preserved as a relic,
seeping ache into its container. Melancholy
embodied, visible despair, corruption made
flesh. Holding the jar is to recognize despair
not as absence but as substance — a black
presence heavy in the vessel.
