# Orpheus & Eurydice ## Overview Orpheus, son
of the Muse Calliope, was the greatest
musician of myth. Eurydice, his beloved, died
from a serpent’s bite. Grief carried Orpheus
into the underworld, where he played so
beautifully that even Hades relented. Eurydice
was allowed to return — if Orpheus could
resist looking back until they reached the
surface. At the threshold, overcome with
longing and fear, he turned. She vanished,
